About local government

Local authorities sit close to communities, combining democratic accountability with practical responsibility for local services.

The role of councils

Turning local priorities into action.

Local government represents the interests of citizens and helps deliver or commission the services people use in everyday life. Because councils operate locally, they can respond to the character, priorities and challenges of their own communities.

Delegating power to the lowest appropriate level gives local authorities an important role in making localism work in practice. Councils may also devolve responsibility further, working with neighbourhoods, voluntary organisations, community groups and other local partners.

That local focus does not reduce the need for strong management. Services must be efficient and effective, budgets must be handled responsibly, and decisions must stand up to public scrutiny.

Public value

What good local government aims to achieve.

Responsiveness: services should reflect what residents actually need and make it straightforward for people to ask questions, give feedback and access support.

Efficiency: public money and staff time should be used carefully. Officers often contribute by monitoring budgets, evaluating projects, managing contracts and improving processes.

Transparency: citizens should be able to understand what is being decided, why decisions are made and how public resources are being used.

“Local government is where broad public policy meets the detail of everyday life: homes, schools, communities, budgets, meetings, records, projects and people.”
